We are thrilled to announce that through the sales of the Support Local
Support Brunswick t-shirts, $4k has been raised for Brunswick Neighbourhood
House.
They have written to say that the funds are being spent on community and
outreach activities during the COVID19 pandemic - in particular, online
courses.
“With restrictions due to COVID-19 closing face-to-face delivery of our
courses, we have moved subjects online and provided them free of charge to
participants. Being able to subsidise the courses has enabled access to online
learning for a cohort which found itself suddenly out of work and stuck at
home.
It has opened up opportunities for learning to a huge number of people, who
might never have had the chance otherwise. We have found that online learning
has been a great form of engagement for isolated, and hard to reach, community
members. In addition, BNH set up laptop borrowing service to facilitate
participation of individuals with no computer access at home.
Courses include English for Conversation, English for Intermediates, English
for Reading & Writing, English for Job Search, English for Occupational
Purposes and the BNH Step to Employment course that covers topics including
resume and letter writing, interview preparation, and job search skills."
BNH has also allocated some of the Support Local, Support Brunswick funds to
run an event during NAIDOC Week (8th-15th November).
The theme for this year's events will be, 'Always Was, Always Will Be', and
BNH will work with the diverse Moreland community to celebrate Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander communities following a lengthy time of lock down and
hardship for many.”
